Darjeeling First Flush - Namring Tea Estate

This is one the best First Flush Darjeelings it has ever been my privilege to taste.

Darjeeling is the old Indian colonial hill station, high up in the relative cool of the Himalayan foothills and a huge contrast from its low-lying neighbour Assam in both climate and the style of its tea.

Assam teas are rich and thick and malty - an important constituent of the classic English-style tea blends.

Darjeeling tea, in contrast, are light and brisk, with a muscatel character. They are called "the Champage of teas".

"First Flush" means the first plucking of the year - the young, bright. light green leaves that grow with such exuberance in the Spring, and are plucked in early April each year. The photo below shows a field that has been partly-plucked: the front part, which has been plucked, is dark. the part near the back is lighter because the first flush is still on the bushes.

Namring Tea Estate

Namring, founded in 1855, is one of the oldest-established tea plantations in Darjeeling, and is now home to more than 2,000 workers.

Like all tea estates, it is really a village all of its own, with virtually every skill and trade represented .

It is divided into two Divisions, Upper and Lower, and three gardens: Poomong, Jingiam, and Namring.

Namring is about an hour's drive from Darjeeling - a drive that is best taken at a steady pace
